Officer Bill Walsh and
Scout visit the Forensic Science Class
| K-9
units around the world play an integral role in many forensic
investigations. In March of 1997, the New Rochelle Police
Department purchased two German Shepherds from the Czech
Republic to form its newly founded Canine Unit. The dogs and
their handlers attended a 16 week Canine Training School held by
the New York City Police Department. K-9 Officer Bill
Walsh and his partner Scout, a pure bred German Shepherd visited
our class. This provided a great opportunity for the forensic
science class to make the connection from the classroom to the
field. A canine's nose is 100 times more sensitive than the
human nose, thus enabling them to track suspects, locate
evidence and in many cases find missing children. The dogs are
also trained in patrol as well as the apprehension of suspects.
The K-9 unit has already found a loaded gun and tracked a
wounded man to a third floor apartment following a gun battle.
Below are some pictures of their visit. |
