English Department Overview

All English classes on all grade levels will focus on the achievement of the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts that have been established by the New York State Department of Education.  Mastery of these standards will be assessed both in the classroom and by the English Regents Examination administered to all juniors.

Grade Level Expectations

The NRHS English Department has identified a list of focus skills for each grade level. The skills are organized by the areas of reading, writing and speaking, and listening and are aligned to the Next Generation ELA standards.  All students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the identified skills by the end of the school year.

National English Honor Society Inductions

Congratulations to advisors Eric Hedman and Kara Vicinelli for a wonderful virtual National English Honor Society induction ceremony on Friday, October 13th. The Split Infinitive chapter inducted 27 students and the existing members did a stellar job organizing the special event. NRHS graduates and family members were in attendance, and we are grateful for their continued support. Eric and Kara, thank you for your dedication to the National English Honor Society and your mentorship of our students.

  • Student Teacher Spotlight

    Tamia Reyes is pursuing a BA in Adolescence Education with a concentration in English, at
    Iona College. Her hometown is The Bronx, where she worked at a variety of summer and
    after-school programs. Tamia’s passion for education and action for peace and social
    justice led her to pursue this journey. On campus, she leads service projects like the
    Prison Ministry Program, volunteering at The Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle and
    Iona College Tutoring Online. Tamia will work with Ms. Ana Ferreira as a student teacher
    during the Fall semester.
