January’s sky is filled with bright stars in the constellations Orion, Taurus, Gemini, Canis major, and Canis minor. Begin by looking toward the southeast in the first few hours after it gets dark to find the three stars in the belt of Orion. This group of stars is known as the Winter Hexagon.
On the nights of January 17 and 18 a waxing crescent moon and the planet Jupiter will appear close in the sky. Jupiter is visible in the night sky all month.
Look to the east in the pre-dawn hours to see “the Roman goddess of beauty”, the planet Venus. Mercury and Mars follow Venus but they get lost in the glare of sunrise.
