New Rochelle High School’s Science Research Program is one of our school district’s signature academic experiences for students. That success led its director, high school science teacher Jeff Wuebber, to be asked to lead a presentation recently at the National Partners in Science Conference in San Diego.
Wuebber’s topic, "Applying Your Laboratory Experience to Lead Students to Success at Science Fairs," explained how other teachers can start science research programs.
In the workshop, modeled after New Rochelle High’s award-winning Science Research Program, teachers engaged in practices to inspire students to complete research projects. Teachers also benefited from Wuebber’s enthusiasm and passion for science.
The conference brings together teachers who have participated in university-level high school teacher research programs across the country, and have done research projects with scientist mentors.
“Attending the conference was an outstanding opportunity to learn from other teachers' research and network with teachers from all over the country on ideas and ways to improve our teaching practices,” Wuebber said.
Wuebber originally got involved with university-level research programs when he did two summers with the Columbia University Summer Research Program for Science Teachers in 2011 and 2012. He has been at New Rochelle High School since 2009.
